North East NSS Festival to begin today
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The ministry of youth affairs and NSS regional centre, Guwahati in collaboration with directorate of higher and technical education, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh is organizing North East NSS Festival at NERIST, Nirjuli from 3rd to 7th June. The objective of festival is to provide an opportunity to the NSS volunteers to interact among themselves and get maximum exposure. Festival will also help youths of NE states to learn more about culture and tradition of fellow neighbouring states.
BJP to field candidate for RS
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The BJP in Arunachal Pradesh has decided to field candidate for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election scheduled on June 19 next.
"Despite knowing the fact that we don’t have sufficient representation in the state Assembly yet we have decided to field our candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat. We will fight the elections in true spirit of democracy,” newly elected BJP Legislature Party leader Tamiyo Taga said. When asked who will be the party’s official nominee for the post, he said the party’s central parliamentary board would decide about it. PTI
Claims & counter claims brewing
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The claims and counterclaims are brewing on the alleged mismanaged of fund meant for construction of 10 numbers of girls hostel under Palin circle involving Rs 624.50 lacs out of total Rs 1249.00 lacs under the Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, sanctioned by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, as the executing department PWD Sangram, Kurung Kumey district today claimed that out of ten, five girls hostel buildings have been completed.
In its counter reply to the press statement issued by the department of social justice empowerment and tribal affairs claiming that the received fund was placed under the disposal of PWD Central Zone which was published in this daily on May 28 last, PWD Sangram stated that project works were implemented through the local contractors of the respective village where the schools are located. It further claimed that out of 10 hostel buildings, five have been physically completed.
It also claimed that at Govt. Middle Schools like, Jamin, Joru, Pania, Dui and Amji, the completed hostel buildings are being used by the students. The department further claimed that at Govt middle school Jullang 80% physical works have been completed and the works of other remaining buildings are yet to be started due to land dispute.
Lamenting on the press statement, the PWD Sangram said that allegation made against the division for alleged embezzlement of fund without execution of work is totally incorrect. It maintained that the division is eager to complete the remaining works as soon as the nodal department released the balance amount of fund.
RS election notified
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The Election Commission today issued notification for holding election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Arunachal Pradesh along with several other states on June 19.
The state's Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following expiry of the term of MP Mukut Mithi on May 26, election office sources said here today.
While the last date of filing nominations has been fixed on June 9 and scrutiny of papers would be done the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12.

Two earth excavators set on fire, claims society
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: Alleging that two earth excavators parked near Kumey river bank near Tali was set on fire by unknown miscreants on May 16 last, the Gungli Welfare Society has urged upon the Kurung Kumey district administration to investigate the case and book the culprits immediately.
In a release, it claimed that one of the earth excavators was completely damaged while the other sustained only partial damage.
Fearing that the incident will deter the formation cutting for road connectivity in one of the most backward area of the state, it appealed people of Tali and Pipsorang area to cooperate with the execution of the work.
AACWALSU demands for re-
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The All Arunachal Contractors Welfare Association Lower Subansiri District Unit (AACWALSU) has requested for retendering of the Mini Secretariat Building at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district.
In its complaint letter addressed to the Lower Subansiri DC, the association claimed that without tendering the project, the PWD Department had awarded the work to M/s Arunachal Pradesh Industrial Developmental and Finance Corporation (APIDFCO).
It further requested the concerned department to tender the project within 15 days and threatened to launch democratic movement if the demand is not fulfilled.

'Refrain from illegal activities'
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The Itanagar PHE division has requested the settlers along the pipe line of Poma Water Supply project to refrain from causing any damage to the pipeline by way of illegal activities like digging or excavation.
In its official statement saying that such damages may cause casualty to life and properties, it warned that if anyone is found involved in such activities will be solely responsible and will invite severe punishment in the appropriate court of law.
House gutted at Kimin
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: Claiming that the residence of Nabam March at Lora village under Kimin circle was gutted down today at five in the morning, the All Kimin Students' Union (AKSU) has requested the Kimin EAC to provide immediate relief to the victim.
As informed by AKSU, nothing could be saved as the entire house and the property was reduced to ashes.

ITANAGAR, Jun 02: Demanding justice for late Aroti Mize, who succumbed to her injuries at RK Mission Hospital, Itanagar on May 21st last, the All Adi Student Union (AdiSU), Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) along with Adi Baane Kebang East Siang unit women wing (ABKWWES) conducted a peaceful candle light march from Doying Gumin Hall to Gandhi Chowk Pasighat on Sunday last.

State cabinet resolves to maintain transparency in governance
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The newly sworn in Council of Ministers this evening held the first Cabinet meeting under the leadership of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and pledged to work with the motto 'Power to People' while passing the Cabinet Resolution with consensus.

ITANAGAR, Jun 02: Sometimes misunderstanding can occur within the family members which is quite natural. But the real problem starts when some organizations with vested interests try to mislead people by fomenting the issue unnecessarily for their personal gain, opined YD Thongchi, President Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) cum Sahitya Akademi awardee while referring to the boundary related disputes between the two neighboring states of Assam and Arunachal. He said this while attending the 75th Lummer Dai birth anniversary celebration at Bihpuria, Assam yesterday.

Pertin, on behalf of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, conveyed Tuki's appreciation and gratitude to the people of Bihpuria and ASS for the establishment of 'Lummer Dai Research Centre' for research and development of local indigenous languages and literature at Bihpuria. Pertin also conveyed Tuki's special gratitude to Golok Hazarika, a prominent senior citizen for donating five bighas of land for establishing the centre at Bihpuria to an exuberant crowd.
He also presented Rs. 3 lakh on behalf of Tuki to Paramananda Rajbongshi, vice president, ASS as a token of aid for the centre amidst thunderous applause.
More applause followed when he announced Tuki's assurance to grant Rs. 5 lakh annually from the government side to help run the centre.
A visibly emotional Bhupen Bora, local MLA of Bihpuria thanked Tuki profusely for the timely and generous contributions.
"I also thank Tuki for declaring state holiday when Bhupen Hazarika died. This shows how much Hazarika was loved by the people of Arunachal. Such acts go a long way in strengthening the age old ties between the people of Assam and Arunachal," he said.
He also announced Rs. 1 lakh from his side as an aid to the centre. He further added that Dai's literary creations will remain alive and evergreen in the heart of his readers.
Rajbongshi, Tasa and a host of intellectuals and elders present in the auditorium also thanked and lauded Tuki for his noble gesture and help. In fact, they decided to invite Tuki to Bihpuria in the immediate future to express their love and gratitude to him.
The other attraction of the function was the songs sung by the evergreen Bengia Hemanta. His rendition of the number 'arun kiran, sheesh ka bhushan' in five languages of Arunachal including Assamese kept the audience spellbound.

First session of sixth legislative Assembly begins
Members administered oath
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The maiden session of the Arunachal Pradesh Sixth Legislative Assembly began today with three days sitting.
The newly elected members took their oath on the inaugural day of the session. Protem speaker Kameng Dolo administered the oath of affirmation to all members as the member of the legislative assembly. Techi Kacho, Tage Taki and Pasang Dorjee Sona preferred to take oath in Hindi while other members took oath in English.
Welcoming the members to the first session of the Sixth Legislative Assembly, Dolo said "You are lucky to be one among the winners." He wished them good luck in shouldering their responsibilities as MLAs.
There are 42 INC, 11 BJP, 5 PPA and 2 independent MLAs in the 60 members Assembly

ABK appeals for one more cabinet berth from Adi community
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: The Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) appealed to the Chief Minister Nabam Tuki for induction of one more MLA from Adi community in his council of ministers.
Extending gratitude to Chief Minister for inducting Tapang Taloh as one of the cabinet ministers, ABK said that there were two representatives from Adi community in the state cabinet berth for the last one decade but it has been reduced to one this time. The Adi community despite having the second highest representative of INC legislators and one of the largest communities of the state could not find two cabinet berths which is a great concerned for the Adi community. It is worth mentioning here that prior to final selection of the cabinet ministers; the ABK had demanded the Chief Minister for induction of alteast two ministers from the Adi community.
The ABK hoped that taking the vastness of the community and its representatives in the state assembly, Chief Minister would induct one more minister from Adi Community in his ministry immediately.
It also expressed hoped that under the leadership of Nabam Tuki, the government would fulfill the expectations of the people and would also bring all round development in the state.
'Arunachal a living lab of traditional knowledge'
ITANAGAR, Jun 02: Arunachal Pradesh is a living laboratory of traditional knowledge, remarked a student from University of South Florida (USF), USA, who had been to RIWATCH, Roing along with 14 other students and two faculties on a 15 days 'Study Abroad' programme from May 12.
"The modern world is looking for traditional knowledge of indigenous communities and really here is the living laboratory of traditional knowledge," the student opined.
The students were led by Dr. Carrion Iraida V and Dr. Manisha Joshi, faculties from department of Social Work and Public Health. It was a first ever study abroad program held in Arunachal Pradesh.
The very objective of the program was to provide US students opportunity to immerse themselves in the indigenous context of Northeast India and provide a learning experience about rich cultural traditions, social structures, health practices, lifestyles, natural resources management and sustainable development.
Further it aimed at strengthening the collaborative engagement in sending equal number of Arunachalee students to USF and other institutes of higher education in USA.
All of them were excited to experience the kind hospitality of the local communities, their festivals, social fabric, value system and above all ethno medicine.
The team visited Mayodiya and Hunli to experience the Indian way of living and travelling in crisscross high altitude thrilling roads.
A total of 16 sessions, including formal sessions by experts, informal interaction
with community elders, women's group and administrators were conducted to fulfil
the study objectives. Some of the remarkable sessions to note were by Sahil Nijhawan,
Ph.D. Student from University College London -
Significance of cross cultural studies by Dr Lata Dani, a retired principal from Pune College and potential to explore networking with institutes of higher education by Dr. Joram Begi, Director of Higher and Technical Education were quite illuminating and informative to them.
The participants were touched to experience the openness and kind hospitality of the local people during number of dinners hosted by different families to them.
As a part of International Studies and community initiatives, the USF team participated in social work programme by cleaning the District Hospital Roing and planting trees at Govt. School Mayu on 24 May.

Arunachal Pradesh Football Association cum Arunachal Olympic Association and Kipa Hage, Assistant General Secy. Arunachal Football Association disclosed that the month long coaching planned in the districts had to be cut short due to the recent simultaneous election. They exhorted the players to take up the short but intensive coaching seriously to acquaint themselves with skills, exercise and technical aspects of the game to excel as good footballers in future. The talented boys from various districts of the state will be sent to Itanagar for further training camp and boys selected in the state level will be sent to FC reading Club, England for training, they disclosed. Ziro zeroing-

Apart from writing down whatever little I know and sharing it with my esteemed readers,
especially the young people of our beautiful state Arunachal Pradesh, traveling is
another passion of mine. I have been to most parts of our state except a few interior
places. This time it was on the 24th of May when I requested my friend Amit Bengia
to take me along with my two children to Ziro about which I have heard so much. As
always, Amit did not disappoint me and asked my children and me to be prepared for
the trip. He told us to carry some warm clothes which we did. So, we started from
Nirjuli in his white Duster driven by a young driver. The road from Kimin to Yazali
was I would put not very good but so so. But from Yazali to Hapoli the road was too
narrow with a number of narrow turnings for comfort. The driver has to be always
alert and on guard to manoeuvre such dangerously narrow curves. However, the much-
However, my frustration and the great conflict going on in my mind due to the absence
of wildlife for which Arunachal Pradesh is known, was compensated by the breathtaking
view of the famous Ranganadi Hydro Project from Potin. The enchanting view had a
soothing effect on my weary physical and mental state. The Ranganadi and its surroundings
look more like a locale in Switzerland. My children thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful
sight and they confided in me that the long journey was worth it. Since I call spade
a spade, some people for the reason[s] best known to them loath and often criticize
my candid expression of things and situations. But I take them in my strides. I sincerely
feel that we must not hide our shortcomings and weaknesses if any. In this context
I may add here that whenever I visit any place in our overtly glorified state, I
am invariably followed by a few not so encouraging things like deplorable roads,
wanton destruction of forests and wildlife, lack of civic sense amongst our tribal
people, erratic power supply, imposing Churches dominating the landscape and dwarfing
the Indigenous places of worship and so on and so forth. This is the bitter truth
in our state. When we reached Hapoli, I was more disappointed seeing the dusty roads,

I was deeply impressed by the systematic community and individual pine trees which
surround the entire Apatani plateau standing like the sentinel. The pine trees are
cut for use when they are fully mature and the forest is replenished by planting
more pine trees for every pine tree felled. This sounded like a music to my willing
ears because in other places of our state people know only how to fell the trees
with disdain and never contemplate to plant trees. We also enjoyed seeing the special
and unique Apatani bamboo groves which are planted systematically. Another new and
innovative thing that impressed me was the way the skillful and intelligent Apatanis
construct the mithun and cow fences by using the upper parts [branches] of the bamboos
with leaves and twigs intact. The fences may look fragile but the mithuns and cows
don't penetrate through them because the twigs and the leaves are irritating to their
sensitive nose. What an idea indeed! After going around in the wilderness, there
was another surprise in store for us in the form of our lunch. My friend Bobby Hano
told us that the lunch was ready. He directed us to reach a certain place in the
outskirt of Hapoli. My eyes could not believe at first. The place was a beautiful
resort with small and cosy cottages. We happily occupied one cottage and ordered
our lunch. We had a sumptuous lunch that my children and I will cherish for a long
time. Then Amit told Bobby to take us to a Homestay in Siiro in Hong village. Bobby
being a local from Ziro and a wonderful host took us to Hong from the Ring road to
acquaint us more with the Apatani plateau. The Ring road I was told was the boundary
between the Apatanis and the Nyishis. We saw almost all the villages. The road was
of course in a real bad shape. Someone told us that the wretched road condition defeated
the former MLA. We had a hearty laugh. Even my children understood what a bad road
could do to a leader. My first impression about Hapoli changed once and for all when
we finally landed up at the Homestay in Hong which was situated amidst serene rural
surroundings. The huts were neat and clean with continuous water supply. The host
and the hostess were so caring and loving that we felt we were in our own homes away
from homes. Interestingly, we did not use the warm clothes we carried along. After
we had a good rest in the Homestay, Bobby informed us that we would be taken to an
Apatani traditional hut in Hapoli to savour the famous Apatani 'O' with pike and
pila. The Homestay is in a way the modern concept of the 'Manya' when during the
barter system days of the distant past, a Nyishi coming down from the hills to Ziro
used to stay in his Apatani Manya's house as a guest. So also, an Apatani visiting
a Nyishi village would stay in his Nyishi Manya's house. This system was prevalent
in the Nocte society also which was called 'Roowa' wherein the man coming from the

As planned, we went to Hapoli where Bobby was waiting for us. Later on the house in which we had such a wonderful time savouring 'O' with nicely prepared pike and pila belonged to none other than Taku Chatung, a young and energetic social worker who is the President of The Apatani Youth Association. While emptying our bamboo mugs of 'O,' we discussed on entire gamut of activities that could further improve Ziro to make it the numero uno tourist destination. I was pleasantly surprised to know that The Apatani Cultural Landscape was amongst the 55 sites selected from India in the Tentative List of World Heritage Site this year which is a great honour in itself. If this materializes then it would be the fittest tribute that the Apatanis could pay to their ancestors for what they had inherited. People like Bobby Hano and Taku Chatung are making a pioneering effort to translate the dreams of all the Apatanis into a reality. The youth, academicians, intelligentsia, NGOs, Women's groups and social workers should work jointly with Hano and Chatung to make Ziro the number one tourist destination. But for this infrastructures like good roads, landing ground, good hospitality, lodges, homestays, cleanliness, protection of the fragile environment and precious wildlife etc arte sine qua non. The tourists come not only to see the people but the forests, rivers, wildlife, ethnic culture, arts, artifacts and all things which are held dear by the tribals. Having visited Ziro and having experienced the warm hospitality, I find no reason why Ziro cannot be a tourism hub in the near future. My children are insistent that I should take them again in the near future too. That I will definitely do because children's happiness is my happiness. Barbaric act of vandalism at Bomdila condemned
BOMDILA, Jun 02: In view of the ongoing impasse over the vandalization of the vehicles belonging to the three MLAs of Tawang at Gontse Gaden Rabgyeling Monastery, Upper Gompa, Bomdila on May 27 by a mob, a mass meeting was convened today at Dirang wherein the Dirang Students Union, ZPMs, ASMs, Gaon Burahs, Political functionaries and senior citizens vehemently condemned the unfortunate incident and termed it as barbaric and totally uncalled for.

Hide and Seek game being played at Naharlagun
Dear Editor,
During the recent eviction drive undertaken by the administration along the roadside at Naharlagun, the streets were cleared off from roadside shops and vegetables vendors. I felt that now the pedestrians will get a better walking space without bumping into each other and the city will glow and look better. In absence of proper sign board and landmark due to overcrowding of streets the visitors from face lot of problems. When the eviction was done, everyone thought roads are going to get wider and clean. But surprisingly in the evening when I came to market, I found everything same like before and vendors were functioning pretty well as if nothing happened. I just overheard some passerby saying “Sab Hide and Seek hai ". Yes, exactly that is what happened. The administration expects a lot from the public. We as responsible citizen should try to execute some of our duties respectively for a better state as our administration has to put more effort in this land of Khusi Khusi from hide and seek.

Since from the last decade, it has been observed that the media fraternities of Arunachal are gradually echoing their voices and deepening their footholds without biasness towards any caste, religion etc. They are continuously putting their endless endeavors to uphold the true spirit of journalism by disseminating the news beyond boundaries. Tongam Rina, Associate editor of The Arunachal Times is a leading example from the media fraternity to raise the various issues of the state without any fear which has been recently honored by the ‘Reporters without Borders’ an international organization that work for free press & information.

In this regards, All Nyishi Students ‘Union (ANSU) has taken initiative to protect the interests of the media fraternity and convened a joint meeting with the member of Arunachal Press Club (APC) and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) on dated 12th May, 2014 at Hotel Ashoka Itanagar under the aegis of ANSU President Byabang Joram, GS Nyanya Gollo and newly elected executive members.
Chopa Cheda, President (APC) and Azing Pertin, President (APUWJ) shared the grievance of misbehavior by our own people, forceful approach by the organizations to publish their issues in the front page only which is unhealthy trend and thereafter they also appeal to respect the profession conduct of media fraternity especially print media editors guild. The ANSU team led by president stated for extension of their full cooperation to ensure the smooth functioning of the media fraternity in the state.
Therefore, I do humbly appeal to the entire concern citizen to cooperate with the media fraternity in order to strengthen the third pillars of society for addressing issues of the state to the region & beyond.

Time to pay back
With the swearing in of 9 cabinet ministers last night, the suspense over cabinet berth is finally over. Even though Chief Minister Nabam Tuki was sworn in on 18th May, the state cabinet was not finalized due to internal fight among Congress MLAs for cabinet berth. It is reported that matter was resolved only after interference from party high command. While portfolios have not been allocated yet, it is hoped that finally ministers will start working and address the concerns of public.
Also it is time Congress leaders forget their difference and work towards fulfilling
the promises made during election. People of Arunachal have given them absolute mandate
and its time they pay back citizens by honestly pursuing developmental agenda. If
